About Bucks Club

The club – sited in Clifford Street near Piccadilly – was founded just after World War 1 when Captain H. J. Buckmaster and some of his fellow officers in Royal Horse Guards decided it was high time there was a London club that could break the mould of ‘stuffy’ London clubs’ – they especially wanted to include an American Cocktail Bar in the club …regarded as a bit heretical at the time!

The club opened in June 1919, with its American Cocktail Bar as a key feature. Members were drawn mostly from Household Cavalry regiments, a trend which lasted many years, though membership is now very varied. The club does have one very familiar claim to fame – the creation in 1921 by its first bartender, ‘Malachy’ McGarry, of the Buck’s Fizz Cocktail.

Being also well-known for the youth of its membership, the club also features in the works of P.G. Wodehouse. Winston Churchill was once a member.
