		<description>My recollections of cadets stem from much earlier. the initial cadets played parade-ground soldiers complete with highly polished brasses and &#039;spooned&#039; boots. As a junior I ended up having to &#039;spoon&#039; a pair of boots. 

Luckily by the time I joined the cadets they were voluntary. We had an Exploration Society and I taught climbing and abseiling to many younger unfortunates. We even did useful things like map reading / orienteering, shooting and bush survival (how to live on grass and leaves, which leaves not to use to wipe your bottom when you, inevitably, got diarrhea from not being accustomed to this wonderful diet). We learnt about camouflage too. 
Such innocent days.
